Herringbone or wide planks? A quick guide
Comparing the most popular floor layouts for visually enlarging interiors and ease of maintenance.
Floor layout affects how an entire interior reads more than most people assume. The same 60×60 cm tiles laid in brick bond and French herringbone give completely different character. Before buying material for several thousand, it's worth knowing what you're choosing — not just aesthetically, but for installation and daily use.
Herringbone — wow effect and higher install cost
Herringbone (French, Hungarian, double) evokes apartments and classic interiors. In a 25–35 m² living room it adds rhythm and a “designed” feel. Downsides: more cuts, higher labor cost, greater risk of error on uneven subfloor. With underfloor heating, watch expansion gaps — poorly laid herringbone can move.

- Dark wood herringbone visually lowers the room — lighter shades in low living rooms.
- Ceramic herringbone in bathrooms needs moisture-resistant grout and regular cleaning.
Wide planks — calm and modern
Boards or vinyl planks in staggered layout (1/3 or 1/4 offset) are the default in modern homes. 19–22 cm board width visually widens the room, and fewer joints make cleaning easier. Installation is simpler and cheaper than herringbone — most crews quote it as standard.
If you're torn between herringbone and planks, generate both variants on a photo of your living room. The difference at full-room scale can be surprising.
Large-format tiles — a third option
120×60 cm or larger gives a single-slab effect — popular in open kitchen-living spaces. Fewer joints means less dirt, but transport and laying need an experienced crew. In visualization, check whether matte or satin surface works better with furniture.
Practical checklist before buying
- Measure area with 8–12% extra for cuts (herringbone: even 15%).
- Check threshold height — thicker floor may require door planning.
- Compare colors in daylight in the room, not just in the store.
- Ask the crew about install time — herringbone is often +30–50% labor.
There's no universal “herringbone vs planks” answer. Herringbone adds character, planks add calm and lower cost. Best to see both layouts at home before signing an order with the supplier.
